History

Heart Math Tutoring became an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit in July 2014 following several years of successful piloting, built from a partnership between Social Venture Partners Charlotte (SVP)Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS)Communities In Schools (CIS). The effort resulted from a focus group led by SVP that identified the need for an avenue for willing community members to effectively help struggling students. The original name “HEART” was an acronym for “Helping Ensure Academic Results through Tutoring.”

Heart’s founding Executive Director joined in July 2013 to recruit Heart’s first Board of Directors and implement a new prototype characterized by a deeper presence in partner schools and dedicated, on-site support.  The program expanded from serving 20 second grade students per school to over 50 students in grades 1 – 5 per school.

In the past four years, the organization has grown to now serve 660 students across twelve schools, thanks to over 750 weekly volunteer tutors and over $640K in support from the philanthropic community.

98% of more than 1,500 students tutored to date have met program growth targets in math, and over 90% of teachers report that students are more confident and enthusiastic towards academics as a result of the program.

Heart’s Mission

To ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in Title I elementary schools.
