Thank You To Volunteers Who Completed 5 Years with Heart

June 16, 2015

Volunteer tutors give students enrolled in Heart Math Tutoring skills and encouragement critical to students’ success. This year, eight volunteers reached a milestone with five years of service: Mike Burnett, Andy Cooney, Minna Elliott, Martha Eubank, Reid Leggett, Margaret Marshall, Missy Miller and Lisa Warren. Each tutoring two students per year, these volunteers have made a difference in the lives of many. For five years, some of the most precious elementary students in Charlotte have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of these dedicated individuals to their classroom door, week after week, from September to May. They have waited for this special one-on-one time when they can tell their tutor what happened over the weekend or what book they are reading, and they have waited for much-needed math skills their tutors know how to give them, which are helping them in school. “These volunteers were involved in Heart’s initial pilot phase five years ago and have continued to give an hour each week to help students build a strong foundation in math,” said Elliott. “To think of all of the students they have touched in five years is inspiring. Personally, it has been a privilege to have joined a program that has such a committed volunteer base and to get to work alongside these individuals. Their gift to the program goes beyond even the 90 hours they have spent giving high-fives to students. We are grateful for their continued support and dedication.” Each of these volunteers has now delivered roughly 180 30-minute tutoring sessions and handled roughly 10,000 Connecting Cubes and 2,000 Ten Frame Cards in the process. Thank you!
