Heart Math Tutoring Helps Hundreds of CMS Students Fill Critical Gaps in Math

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – June 29, 2018 – Heart Math Tutoring (Heart) – a nonprofit group dedicated to helping students in high-poverty elementary schools develop math skills and academic confidence – has determined the impact its volunteer tutor-based program had across 17 school partners this year using annual surveys and post-assessments.
In the 2017/18 school year, volunteers used Heart’s structured curriculum and on-site support to help 893 students fill critical gaps in math. Ninety-eight percent of Heart students met program growth goals in math, growing in two or more building block concept areas. On average, students doubled the goal – growing in 4.9 concept areas. The goals were set with guidance from math specialists at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and UNC Charlotte.
In addition, 90% of teachers saw growth in foundational math skills for students enrolled in Heart, 89% of teachers believe that students showed an increase in confidence toward math as a result of Heart, and 62% said students became more confident in academic subjects other than math.

The skills that students gain through Heart are proven to be critical building blocks for success in math, helping students progress into higher levels of math, meet graduation requirements, and access post-secondary and career opportunities.”
In 2017, UNC Charlotte Urban Institute released a matched comparison analysis which found correlation between growth or mastery on Heart’s internal assessments and higher growth on NC End of Grade tests (EOGs). The study also found that Heart students grew more on EOG tests in comparison to peers.
Since 2013/14, Heart has grown from 120 volunteers across two school sites to 980 across 17 school sites, collectively providing more than 17,000 hours of one-on-one instruction to CMS students this school year. One hundred percent of volunteers reported their experience with Heart as positive, and 98% would recommend tutoring with Heart to friends or colleagues.
