Heart Math Tutoring Sells Out 6th Annual HeartThrob in Record Time, Raising Over $19,000

February 14, 2020

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Feb. 14, 2020 – More than 400 Heart tutors and supporters packed Norfolk Hall at the Suffolk Punch for Friday’s 6th Annual HeartThrob fundraising event. The evening benefits Heart Math Tutoring (Heart Tutoring), a nonprofit that matches volunteers with students in 23 elementary schools across Charlotte, developing their math skills and academic confidence through one-on-one tutoring.

Organized by a group of Heart Tutoring’s young professional volunteers, event costs were fully covered by generous community partners: Presenting Sponsor – Global Endowment Management; Platinum Sponsor – Duke Energy Piedmont Natural Gas; Gold Level Sponsors – AmWINS Group, Inc., Balfour Beatty, Flagship Healthcare Properties, K&L Gates, and Pamlico Capital; and Event Sponsors – Alfred Williams, CBRE, Gensler, HyLite LED, LLC, Randolph Builders, Raymond James, and Red Ventures.

The sponsors understand that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders and they believe that Heart Math Tutoring is a key partner in the efforts to ensure each student in our community has an opportunity to succeed. Because of their sponsorships, all HeartThrob ticket proceeds directly benefit Heart Tutoring and will fund a third of a school site, providing tutoring and mentorship to 50 students for the entire 2020/21 school year. In addition to their donations to subsidize the cost of the event, these sponsors also collectively provide 54 tutors throughout the current school year to the Heart Tutoring program, along with many other companies who encourage their employees to volunteer as tutors.

51 percent of economically disadvantaged Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students in grades 3-8 performed below grade level in math on 2019 North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests. To help address this issue, Heart Math Tutoring recruits, trains, and supports volunteers as tutors for economically disadvantaged students in CMS elementary schools. Over 1,300 community members, including many HeartThrob attendees, spend one hour each week providing mentorship and delivering Heart Tutoring’s research-based, hands-on curriculum. An on-site coordinator and ongoing training and support are provided for volunteers during tutoring, as well.

Thanks to our partners, Heart Tutoring has grown from serving 105 students across two schools to over 1,150 students across 23 school sites in just seven years. Since the beginning of the program, 98 percent of over 3,000 students have met program growth goals in math, growing in two or more building block concept areas. Throughout the 2018/19 school year, 92 percent of teachers observed an increase in student confidence and enthusiasm toward math as a result of Heart Tutoring, and 63 percent reported students are more confident in subjects other than math.

From the HeartThrob stage, Event Chair Ashley Kaiser thanked the tutors saying, “The time you spend with your kids not only helps their math skills, but their confidence and enthusiasm.”

Additional volunteers are needed this semester! To learn more or sign up to be a volunteer tutor through April, visit hearttutoring.org.
